Keystone, long celebrated for its ski slopes and mountain vistas, has undergone a remarkable transformation in recent years. The town’s incorporation in February 2024 marked a pivotal shift, granting residents greater autonomy and fostering a wave of development aimed at enhancing both infrastructure and community services.
Incorporation and Community Empowerment
The decision to incorporate was driven by a desire among residents to have more control over local governance and the allocation of tax revenues. Mayor Ken Riley, Keystone’s first mayor, emphasized the importance of this move, stating, “What it means is citizens get to control their own destiny. We get to take the tax dollars that we generate, and more than half of those tax dollars will come immediately back to the community, to be spent in the community to support community needs and priorities.”
Infrastructure Enhancements
Post-incorporation, Keystone has prioritized infrastructure improvements. A notable achievement is the construction of the town’s first sidewalk, connecting the intersection of W. Keystone Rd and US Highway 6 to the Summit Stage Keystone Lodge bus stop. This project was funded through the town’s lodging tax and a generous donation from Lodge, LLC, the developer of the Brightwood Condominiums.
Public Safety Initiatives
In a collaborative effort to bolster public safety, Keystone established the joint Dillon Keystone Police Department, one of the few jointly operated police departments in Colorado. This initiative underscores the town’s commitment to innovative and cost-effective solutions for resident safety. The department has actively engaged with the community by attending local events, increasing safety presence along U.S. Highway 6, and sharing updates at Town Council Meetings.
Economic Growth and Real Estate Development
Keystone’s incorporation has also spurred economic growth, particularly in the real estate sector. The Kindred Resort, a six-story development featuring a 107-room hotel and 95 condominiums, has garnered significant interest, with 90% of the condos already sold. This development is part of a broader effort to redefine Keystone as a premier winter destination, attracting a more upscale clientele and enhancing the town’s competitive edge among Colorado’s ski resorts.
Community Engagement and Future Planning
Looking ahead, Keystone is actively involving residents in shaping the town’s future. The draft Comprehensive Plan is available for public review and comment, inviting community members to contribute their insights and help guide the town’s development. Additionally, the town is hosting a series of “Coffee with the Cops” events to foster stronger relationships between residents and law enforcement.
Keystone’s evolution from a resort community to a thriving municipality reflects a collective commitment to growth, safety, and community engagement. As the town continues to develop, the active participation of its residents will be crucial in shaping a vibrant and sustainable future.
